The rammed-earth structure echoes the natural materiality of the English country estate’s existing buildings

The Newt in Somerset hotel recently unveiled a new building housing a yoga studio on its historic campus in England. Crafted by UK-based Invisible Studio, the space’s rammed-earth design echoes the local limestone composition of the existing fitness center and is distinguished with a unique hue of red. The roof’s copper shingles nod to the Newt’s lakeside apiary and exhibition venue, Beezantium, as well.
In addition to an enormous window that maximizes views of the hotel’s vegetable garden, the yoga studio is also equipped with a 50-foot-long panel of single-insulated, double-glazed glass that frames vistas of the sky to establish it as “an immersive space for contemplation with a single view of the sky, in order to focus on the body,” says architect and Invisible Studio founder Piers Taylor.
Inside, beech slats infuse warmth across the studio—mirroring the interior of the fitness center. “Beech is often used for sports floors become of its natural springiness,” Taylor adds. The handsome wood narrative is disrupted on one wall of the interior that is clad with full-height mirrors that amplify the soothing materiality and reinforce the design as a sanctuary.
