Two properties in Columbia County have been nominated to the State and National Registers of Historic Places, according to Gov. Kathy Hochul.

The Muldor-Miller House in Claverack and the Red Rock Schoolhouse in Canaan are among 27 properties nominated statewide.

The Muldor-Miller House, located on Route 23B, is a Federal and Greek Revival farmhouse, with stone construction, that was built around 1790. The home, which is long associated with the Muldor-Miller family, has ties to the region’s Dutch colonial period. It also represents the transition from agricultural economy to country living in the 20th century.

The house is situated on a 2-acre lot and includes the main house, a guesthouse and attached garage built to echo the house in design, a small orchard, koi pond and vegetable garden with sprinkler system.

The house is separated from Route 23B by a low stone wall with three gated entrances. A wrought-iron gate leads to the entrance door, according to property records.

The Red Rock Schoolhouse, located on county Route 24, was built around 1830 and served as an educational site through 1943. The building is an example of an early 19th century vernacular Greek Revival-style one-room schoolhouse and represents the history of education in rural Red Rock.

The Red Rock Schoolhouse is a one-story, front-gabled, two-bay by three-bay frame building. It sits on a stone and concrete foundation and has an asphalt shingle roof. The rafters and floor joists appear to be half-sawed or hewn trees with flattened tops at the ridge with a simple cross lap and single pin.

The schoolhouse is located on a 2.67-acre parcel which was assembled after the schoolhouse closed, according to property records.

The building has been undergoing renovations, which are expected to take a few years, according to the Red Rock Historical Society.

“New York is defined by its diverse culture and history, and we will continue efforts to keep our state’s inspiring story alive,” Hochul said. “Adding these 27 sites to the State and National Registers will provide support and resources to preserve their rich heritage and help ensure future generations of New Yorkers can continue to be inspired.”

Over the last decade, New York State has approved use of rehabilitation commercial tax credits for more than 1,000 historic properties, driving more than $12 billion in private investment, Hochul said.

State and National Registers listing can assist owners in revitalizing properties, making them eligible for various public preservation programs and services, such as matching state grants and state and federal historic rehabilitation tax credits.

Once recommendations are approved by the commissioner of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, who serves as the state historic preservation Officer, the properties are listed on the New York State Register of Historic Places and then nominated to the National Register of Historic Places, where they are reviewed and, once approved, entered on the National Register.

The State and National Registers are the official lists of buildings, structures, districts, landscapes, objects, and sites significant in the history, architecture, archaeology, and culture of New York State and the nation. More than 120,000 designated historic properties throughout the state are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, individually or as components of historic districts.
